Have you been dreaming of exploring the Andes but wondering if you have what it takes to hike at high altitudes? Ecuador is quietly holding its ground as one of the most underrated adventure destinations in South America. Home to the legendary Avenue of the Volcanoes, this compact region offers towering peaks and a rich indigenous culture that makes every climb deeply rewarding.

If you are a discovery-oriented traveler or an avid hiker looking to push your limits, taking on the Ecuadorian Andes is the perfect challenge. Conquering Ecuador's Avenue of the Volcanoes requires preparation and respect for the altitude. Here is everything you need to know about navigating the altitude, planning your route, and safely experiencing the magic of Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, and Iliniza Norte.
Can't-Miss Hikes, Wildlife, and Scenic Viewpoints
Many travelers ask if climbing in Ecuador is just a scenic hike or a proper mountaineering experience. The answer is that it is a beautiful blend of both. You will spot wild vicuñas roaming the alpine tundra and explore unique páramo vegetation across the mountain reserves.
Rather than just focusing on one peak, our 10-day expedition takes you on a comprehensive journey through the Andes. We guide you up the rocky ridgelines of Iliniza Norte for panoramic views, lead you on a midnight glacier ascent of Cotopaxi under the stars, and finally take you up Chimborazo, the point on Earth closest to the sun.

Altitude, Acclimatization, and Difficulty
How serious is the altitude, and how fit do you need to be? This is the most common concern for visitors. Even if you are highly active, the thin air at 4,800 meters and above feels entirely different than hiking at sea level.
Baseline fitness is important, but acclimatization and preparation are absolutely essential. This is exactly why our expedition goes far beyond the climb itself. When you book our 10-day package, you receive a tailored 12-week Move Adventures mountain fitness program and three one-on-one coaching calls. We cover logistics, gear, and custom training so you arrive in Ecuador fully prepared and confident. Once in the country, our itinerary is carefully designed to build your altitude tolerance gradually through specific acclimatization hikes before any major summit attempts.

Do You Need a Guide? Meet Your Expedition Team
Travelers frequently ask if a guide is mandatory. For technical summit attempts on Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, certified guides are legally required. But more importantly, local experts ensure your safety, manage your pacing, and provide deep insights into the local culture.
On this expedition, you are never alone. You will be guided by an elite team:
Cristian: An ASEGUIM-certified guide and Wilderness First Responder with over 15 years of experience in the Ecuadorian Andes.
Micaela: The founder of Move Adventures. She is a bilingual guide, a certified athletic trainer, and a Wilderness First Aid professional who curates your pre-trip strength training.
Chris: An experienced expedition leader and adventure photographer with summits in the Himalayas and Africa.
Weather, Seasons, and What to Pack
What time of year is best for clear views and safe trails? The climbing season during the drier months provides ideal conditions for glacier travel. However, mountain temperatures change incredibly fast.
When it comes to gear, a smart layering system is vital. You need to bring personal mountaineering clothing like thermal base layers and waterproof jackets. We take care of the heavy lifting. Your expedition includes all the required technical mountaineering equipment for the climbs, plus dedicated glacier skills instruction at the José Rivas Refuge to ensure you are comfortable on the ice.
